History

Cloud Computing was created by John McCarthy. McCarthy is in general considered a creator of the term AI (artificial intelligence). He claimed in sixties that computing might be sold in future in the same way as utilities are (electricity, water etc.). The first company to develop commercially successful cloud computing technology was Amazon. Amazon’s leaders were not happy with the usage of their hardware so they decided to develop cloud computing for their own needs. The actual usage of Amazon’s hardware was roughly 10% and the rest was used only in the case of heavy traffic which happened only occasionally. So in the end Amazon started reselling redundant computing power and data storage.  First commercial cloud computing service – AWS (Amazon Web Services) – was released in 2006.
A year later, Google, IBM and a number of colleges and universities across the world started their own development.
Since 2009 is cloud computing one of industry’s future key technologies.
